3 Juicy-Fun Tarot Exercises for a Rainy Day!

I decided a month ago that I needed a break from The Internet (including Netflix). And I’ve been spending each day since meticulously planning my escape!

The internet can be a wonderful thing – a source of creativity, connection, learning, etc. But it can also be used for other things (things I would never do!) like stalking an ex, reading snark blogs, watching porn and immersing yourself in deliciously gossipy FB groups!

In other words, the Internet can be a massive distraction. And right now I long for quiet, emptiness and wide open space so that new ideas can float in. So I decided to take a two week break and use that time to do some soul searching, clean my kitchen cupboards and (hopefully!) get some inspiration for my next Tarot project.

Since I won’t have Netflix to fall back on for evening entertainment, I plan to cozy up to my Tarot deck each night. While I was searching my site for Tarot exercises, I found 3 that I’d completely forgotten about!

Tarot craft: Make Your Own Tarot Jar!

This afternoon as I was reading Andy Matzner’s The Tarot Activity Book, I was inspired to try one of his Tarot projects: creating my very own Tarot display jar!

I’m going to give you a run-down on how it went…but first I want to tell you about Andy’s book.

The Tarot Activity Book is just that – a whole book full of Tarot crafts, journalling exercises and fun activities, none of which involve reading the cards – which is refreshing.

Tarot’s usefulness extends far beyond the realm of readings and this book helps you use Tarot in ways you’ve never imagined.

One of the activities in his book is to make a Tarot mason jar. Mason jars have become trendy ever since hipsters started drinking green juice out of them with straws. A cafe in my neighborhood started using them as lightbulbs and the place became an instant hipster haven. Hordes of plaid, beards and tuques suddenly began beating their door down! It was wild!

Step 1: fill mason jar with salt or sand

You only need about 1″ of salt or sand. You could use soil if you’re really earthy, or that pink Himalayan sea salt if you like pretty shit.

This is to provide a base to put stuff in later.

Step 2: decorate the jar

I skipped this step because I’m lazy and also because I just knew it would end up looking like crap.

Andy suggests using acrylic paint to pretty up the inside or outside of the jar or even gluing bits of fabric or papers on it. Someone good at crafts would do a good job of this – me? Not so much. I know my limits.

Step 3: choose a Tarot card to go in the jar!

The Star from Dame Darcy’s Mermaid Tarot

This is the best part. I chose The Star because it helps me remember to relax and let go and stop trying to control everything and everyone.

If you’re trying to manifest something, you could choose a Tarot card that represents what you want to bring into your life.

Or, if you want to channel a particular card’s energy, like the Queen of Wands or The Empress, you could choose that for the jar.

OR… if your a fan of doing daily one card draws, you could put your daily draw card in your jar and change it up each day.

Step 4: Put nice objects in the jar

Choose some objects that relate to your chosen Tarot card or that are special to you and place them in the bottom of the jar, around the card.

I chose some pretty colored crystals, but you could use jewelry, sea shells, flowers, and other trinkets.

My cat decided to help me with this step by knocking all my crystals off the table, one at a time…

Step 5: Illuminate! (optional)

Put a battery operated candle or string of lights in your Tarot jar to create a magical glow!

I first used a string of fairy lights for my Tarot jar but I didn’t love how they seemed to obstruct my view of the Tarot card. A smaller string would have been ideal.

I then tried using a real tealight and this was a terrifying disaster! I almost burnt my Tarot card and the flame was so bright it also seemed to obstruct the card.

I think the best option is one of those fake plastic tealights that use a battery. It will create a soft glow without turning your jar into a Tarot inferno!

Unfortunately I didn’t have any battery powered tealights on hand, so I’m just making due with the show-stealing string lights until I find some.

Step 6: Display your Tarot jar!

Proudly display your Tarot jar somewhere you’ll see it, like your desk, bookshelf or bedside table.

Whenever I look at my Tarot jar, I’m reminded that there is order in the chaos and that everything is working out the way it needs to. It’s okay for me to let go and trust…

Check out The Tarot Activity Book!

If you liked this crafty Tarot exercise and find yourself thirsting for more, Andy Matzner’s book has lots to offer. With almost 100 Tarot activities and exercises, this book helps you go beyond readings to develop a whole new dimension to your Tarot journey.

Check it out on Amazon

Show & Tell…

My challenge to you is this:

  1. Decide what card you want to feature in your own Tarot jar and tell me in the comments below…
  2. Create your own Tarot jar and then hop on over to my Facebook page and send me a pic! I can’t wait to see what you create!!!

Good luck and have fun 🙂

8 Questions Your Tarot Cards Have for YOU!

Ever notice how you’re always asking your Tarot deck questions, but it never asks you anything? You must feel like such a Nosy Nellie sometimes!

Well, that’s about to change…

In the past I’ve written posts like 20 Questions to Ask Your Tarot Cards Tonight! and how to interview your Tarot deck to get to know it better.

But did you know that your Tarot cards actually have SO MANY questions for you? Yes, you.

You may have been looking at your Tarot cards for answers, but your cards have been trying to ask you questions….the kind of questions that, if answered, lead to those answers! So it’s high time you started paying attention…

Okay, let’s get down to business.

Step One: Pick a Card

Shuffle your deck and draw a card. That’s right, just draw a card but don’t ask a question.

Step Two: Question Time!

Now it’s time to hear the questions that this Tarot card is asking you. You may want to jot down your impressions on a bit of paper if that helps you process it and remember.

The first question is this:

1. How do I make you feel?

Take a moment to really gaze at your card. It may illicit feelings of relief, stress, confusion or joy or maybe you feel nothing at all. Just notice it.

2. What do you notice the most? What keeps drawing your attention?

The thing that draws your attention is the symbol you want to focus on first.

3. What does that symbol represent?

Just be literal here, don’t get all college kid fancy. In the card I drew for this exercise (7 of wands from the Heart and Hands Tarot) I see a fist clenching over a club. To me, that represents holding onto something, grasping, tightly holding, gripping, wielding a stick.

Heart and Hands Tarot by Liz Blackbird
Heart and Hands Tarot by Liz Blackbird

4. What’s the overall theme of this symbol?

For me, the theme of the gripping fist is holding onto something in a desperate, defensive way or defending something.

5. Are you doing this in your own life? Where? How?

It could be something your doing that is holding you back or it could be something you need to start doing in order to move forward.

With the 7 of Swords, I’m asking myself what am I holding onto so tightly? Do I need to let go of anything? What am I defending? Should I be standing up for myself more?

6. How does this affect your life? Is it positive, negative, neutral? Both or all?

For me, the tendency to hold onto things for a long time (like my plastic hooker boots from 1999 and ancient Cosmo mags) can stifle my energy. Yet the ability to defend myself and stand up for my rights is a good thing.

7. Is this a quality you should invite more of? Less of?

In my case, I may want to invite more of the assertive, passionate energy of the 7 of Wands but less of the gripping fear.

Step Three: Putting it Together

8. Moving forward, what are you going to do differently as a result of these  insights?

I plan to make a list of what I want to let go of, but also a list of what is important to me – what I feel is worth fighting for. Hopefully this will give me some clarity on what I need to focus on as I move forward with projects, work and relationships.

This last step allows you to put what you’ve learned about yourself into action in your daily life. Don’t skip this powerful step! It’s how you allow Tarot to work magic in your life.

Letting your cards ask YOU the questions allows you to experience the Tarot in a deeper, more personal way. A cards initial meaning may not really make sense to you at first, but if you do some inquiry and answer the above questions, I guarantee you will have an AHA! moment and any confusion will melt away.

Over to you!

What card did you draw for this exercise? What insights did you get from it? Feel free to share in the comments below!!!!

The Most Rebellious Way to Read Tarot….EVER!

Are you tired of reading Tarot in the same old, tired, boring way? Are you ready to kick things up a notch and read outside the box?

You know how you shuffle the deck and then randomly choose some cards? Scrap that!

There’s a new, cheeky way to read Tarot and I want you to give it a go. But first, some background….

The other night I was getting ready to give myself a Tarot reading and I thought “I hope I don’t get any shitty cards.”

I had just had a particularly uninspiring day and I wanted to perk myself up.

Then an epiphany slammed into my brain!

What if I just chose the cards I wanted?

So I did.

I picked the three cards I really, really wanted. The Empress, The Magician and the Ace of Cups.

tarot reading crystal visions
Crystal Visions Tarot

These cards symbolize the kind of energy I want to bring into my life – creativity, power, magic and fulfillment!

Okay – I want you to stop right now, get your Tarot deck and choose the 3 cards that you would just LOVE to get in a reading. Like your 3 favorite cards or the 3 cards that really sum up what you want to draw into your life right now.

Now, look at each card one by one and ask yourself these questions:

  1. How am I already like this card?
  2. What activities or things help me feel like this card?
  3. How would I like this card to show up in my life right now?
  4. What can I do – today- to create more of this in my life?
  5. Is there anything that might stop me from doing this and how will I overcome it?

Here is a little sample of how I did this exercise for the first card….

How am I already like this card?

When I looked at The Empress I reminded myself that I am creative (I like arts and crafts!) and I can be nurturing sometimes (like with my houseplants).

What activities or things help me feel like this card?

Painting helps me feel creative and relaxed, just like The Empress and spending time in the kitchen making tasty things feels very nurturing.

How would I like this card to show up in my life right now?

I would to be able to relax more and feel abundant, like everything is unfolding and happening in the way it needs to and all I need to do is hold the space for things to flourish, instead of feeling like I have to do, do, do, push, push, push.

What can I do – today –  to create more of this in my life?

Practice meditation! I always forget to do this. And make time to paint at least once a week.

Is there anything that might stop me from doing this and how will I overcome it?

I might tell myself that I don’t have time and there are other things that should take priority – like doing homework, working on creating my Tarot course or doing laundry. I will overcome this by writing my painting or meditation date into my calendar each week and then maybe inviting a friend to join me (so I can’t waffle and do laundry instead!)

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

Doing this exercise with your Tarot cards might actually create real change! This exercise isn’t for wimps, so don’t attempt this unless your ready to become a fearless, deep diving Tarot explorer 😉

Tying it together….

Now that you’ve drilled down each card individually, take a step back and look at these cards as a whole. Do you noticed any similarities between the cards? Any repeating symbols, colors, suits or numbers?

Repeating patterns are your subconscious’ way of getting your attention and communicating something super-secret and important to you!

For example, I notice that there are lots of wings in my three cards – butterflies, a dragonfly and birds. What do wings represent for me? Freedom!

So there is some message here about breaking free or feeling free – and if I choose to go deeper into the reading I can contemplate this a bit more and maybe journal about it. But I’m lazy right now, so I think I’ll just go watch Mad Men and eat a vanilla bean chocolate bar…..it’s from the health food store so it doesn’t count as junk food 😉

Share your results!

I’d love to hear from you!! Please feel free to share your cards and your epiphanies in the comments below….

Tarot Game!

When David, Ronda and I were recording our last episode of the Menage A Tarot podcast, we were discussing other fun uses of Tarot cards, besides Tarot card reading. The subject of Tarot Games came up and an idea just popped into my head. So here it is!

This Tarot game can be played with two or more players. It doesn’t matter if the players have prior knowledge about Tarot or not – anyone can play this game, as long as there’s a willingness to be creative and open minded!

The Rules

1) Each person chooses 7 cards from the deck (without looking at them!) If you are playing this with more than four players, you may want to choose only five. Don’t let other players see your cards!

2) The first person chooses someone at the table to “read”. This is done by picking one of their cards (which are laying facedown on the table in front of them). In two sentences or less, say something about them that they can confirm with a “yes” or a “no”. For example, if you draw The Hermit for your friend you might say “lately you’ve been craving time alone” and your friend can either say “no, not true” or “yes!”

3) If they say “yes” to your statement, then you get to keep that card – you will want to put it in a separate pile from your original 7 cards. This is your “treasure pile” and these cards won’t get circulated back into the game.

If they say “no”, then they keep that card. Your turn is up and now it’s the next person’s turn. The next person might choose to read for that same person or a different person. Just be sure that when it’s your turn to read that you don’t just keep reading the same person over and over again (unless there’s only two of you!).

4) Once all your cards are gone you may choose another 7 from the deck. All players will have two groups of cards – a stack of the cards they take from other players when they read them correctly (Treasure Pile) and their own cards that they should have fanned out in front of them for other players to choose.

5) The object of this game is to end up with the most cards in your Treasure Pile. You may play this game until all the cards are gone from the deck, or you may set a time limit of an hour or two and whoever has the most cards at the end wins.

Playing with non-Tarot readers

If you are playing with people who know nothing at all about Tarot, all the more fun! All they have to do is look at a card and pretend to read it for that person. You’d be surprised at how well this can work!

It’s sometimes helpful to try to just interpret the card literally. For example, look at The Fool – what is happening? A guy is about to step off a cliff. So you could say “you are about to jump off a cliff – metaphorically. Are you thinking of taking a risk right now?”

Or, in the case of Temperance, you might say “you have one foot into something and one foot out”

Alternatively, you may keep a Tarot card meanings book on hand and refer to it throughout the game if you need to. This isn’t cheating and it’s totally allowed in this game!

Some things to keep in mind

Alcoholic beverages and rowdiness are completely acceptable! Unlike when you do a regular Tarot reading, you don’t need to remain sober and mature for this one. Of course, this is entirely dependent on your preferences and the people you are playing with.

The point of this game is to have fun with the cards and play at guessing the meanings of the cards (if you are new to Tarot) and practice your reading skills if you are more experienced.

Should you use the same Tarot deck you use for readings?
If you have more than one deck, use a deck that you don’t usually read with. If you do use your one and only beloved Tarot deck, just make sure to energetically cleanse your deck before using it again for readings.

*Full Disclosure: I have yet to actually test out this Tarot game, mainly because I can’t find anyone whose interested in playing it! I know, I know, my friends are boring. So I may post some updates to this post once I do try it out.

Thoughts? Comments?

Did you try this game? How did it go? What do you think about using Tarot cards for games? Is it sacrilege or good clean fun? Tell me in the comments below – I’d love to hear from you!

Should Tarot Readers Charge for Their “Gift”?

This post generated the most discussion and comments…

There is something that I occasionally hear people say that drives me batshit crazy. It is this: “I don’t charge for giving readings because being able to read is a gift so therefore I would never charge someone for it.”

The Tarot Court Cards….in bed! Part 3: The Knights

Writing this series has been the most fun of all, even if hardly anyone comments on these posts (I know your reading them. Google analytics doesn’t lie!). Warning: my evil twin Veronica helped me with this one…

The Knights are my FAVORITE court cards to hop into bed with! Why? Because they are essentially alpha males in training. They have all the vigor and sexual energy required of a hero in a steamy romance novel, but lack the overbearing bossiness of the Kings.

3 Ways to do a Reading Without Tarot cards

There are times in life when doing a Tarot reading may be inconvenient or impossible.

For example, you’re on a camping trip with your uber-religious family who shuns Tarot and all other fun things. Or you’re bored shitless waiting in the dentist’s office but you don’t have your deck with you. Or you’re just totally pissed off at your Tarot deck and don’t want to consult it today….

Here are some fun and inventive ways to flex your intuitive reading muscles without your usual deck of Tarot cards:

1. Consult a regular old book as your “oracle”

I got this idea from Keri Smith’s awesome book Living Out Loud.

Here’s how it works:

Step One: Think of a big, important question you want answered like “what is the meaning of my life?” or “how can I get more boys to notice me?”

Step Two: Now, randomly pick a book off your shelf. It could be The Bible or Having the Cowboy’s Baby. It doesn’t matter!

romance novel
This book may contain all the answers to your biggest dilemmas!

Step Three: Let the book fall open to any page and let your gaze come to rest on a random sentence. Read that sentence out loud. That is your answer!

Sometimes this exercise produces profound results. Other times it’s just good for a laugh. But either way, it’s worth a try.

starstarstarstarstar

2. Read your current environment as if it were a Tarot card

Step One: Think of a specific question or just ask “what do I need to know right now?”

Step Two: Take a good look around you. Your environment is like a Tarot card – rich with symbols and secret messages just waiting to be discovered!

What do you notice first? What stands out? What symbols are present? What color is most prevalent? What is going on?

What is on your left hand side? This is the side of intuition and creativity.

What is on your right? This is the side of action and power!

Step Three: If there is a message for you in your environment (and trust me, there is!) what would it be? What are your surroundings trying to tell you?

I did this exercise last Spring when I was walking along the beach. I asked “what do I need to focus on right now?” and the first thing I noticed was a family of geese, which were flying along. I watched them land in the water, floating gracefully and then diving under the surface. It suddenly struck me how amazing it is that geese get to traverse the world of sky, land and water. I was reminded of the three worlds in Shamanism – the upper, lower and middle earth. At the time I was reading several books on Shamanism and I took this as a clear message that I was to keep on reading this stuff. Also, not to be afraid to dive deep into the unconscious world of dreams and meditative journeys.

3. Doodle!

You know how when your listening to someone on the phone you sometimes scribble little drawings without realizing it?

These scribbles can be a goldmine for illustrating what’s going on in your subconscious mind!

doodles
Something I drew while listening to someone boring

Try this!

You can do this exercise by yourself or with a friend.

Step One: Get out a piece of paper and some crayons (or a pencil if the idea of crayons gives you the creeps). Put on some nice music and sit at your table and just draw some stuff. Don’t think too hard, just let your mind wander. Don’t try to draw something “good”. Just doodle!

Step Two: If you’re doing this with a friend, you can trade drawings and then proceed to “read” each others pictures in the same way you would read a Tarot card.

If you are doing this alone, then you would just “read” your own picture.

Pay attention to what you are drawn to. What color stands out? What symbols speak to you? What is the general feel of the picture? Does it seem to be saying something specific?

Often, the pictures we draw illustrate what is going on for us in our inner and outer lives.

I first did this exercise years ago in a workshop called Exploring Your Psychic Self. The woman who I was partnered with swore she had no psychic abilities whatsoever, yet she was able to spell out my deepest wishes and desires just by looking at my drawing. A drawing that looked like it was drawn by a five year old on acid.

So there you have it! Three totally new ways to have fun with your intuition. No Tarot cards required!

In the comments below, tell me which exercise your going to try today :)…..

What Your “Higher Self” REALLY Wants You to Know (it may surprise you!)

Do you ever wonder what your “higher self” is trying to tell you?

Well guess what? Messing around with your Tarot cards is one of the best ways to find out!

But before I get to the real juice, I just want to say this – I really, really despise the term “higher self”. It sounds so snooty!

Whenever I hear that term, I get this picture of a much snobbier version of myself, reclining on a cloud, turning my nose up.

So from here on out, I will instead refer to the “Inner Self”. I like that phrase better, as it doesn’t sound so hierarchical and holier than thou. Plus, it just sounds more intimate and mysterious – like a deeper, truer part of myself.

Okay, so back to Tarot!

Our Inner Self communicates to us through symbols. We encounter symbols all the time – in dreams, waking life and of course in Tarot cards.

If we actively engage with those symbols, we can discover some fascinating things about ourselves.

Now what if you were to think of your next Tarot reading as a letter from your Inner Self to you?

A letter that is direct, to the point and maybe even a little bitchy!

Here’s an example of what I mean…

Me: “Inner Self, what lovely message do you have for me today?”

Inner Self: “OMG! I’m so glad you asked! You need to ____________ and __________ and for God’s sakes, stop __________________!”

When I did this exercise last night, this is what I got:

tarot-reading-hezicos
Hezicos Tarot by Mary Griffin

I felt the message was pretty clear: “You need to make a decision and embrace being an outsider and for God’s sakes stop pretending to be helpless!

I found this Tarot exercise worked best when I limited my interpretation to one statement/sentence per card. This forced me to really feel for the essence of the card, rather than get all brainy and over-thinky about it.

Now, it’s your turn!

Shuffle your Tarot deck and as you lay out three cards, do so knowing that this is a letter from your Inner Self. As you turn your cards over, see if you can fill in the blanks:

“You need to _________ and _________ and for God’s sakes stop __________!”

Tip: Forget about the traditional card meanings and pay attention to the symbols that show up, the body language of the figures and of course, the overall feeling essence of the cards.

In the comments below, feel free to share your cards and your interpretation – I can’t wait to read it!!!
