King of Swords ~ Tarot Card for Friday

king of swords
Robin Wood Tarot

The King of Swords blasts into our day in the form of an overly rational friend or negative naysayer. Take these people with a grain of salt and stay true to your own beliefs about what is true for you.

You probably have a close friend or family member who says things like “be realistic” or “don’t get your hopes up” or “its nice to dream!” If you get frustrated by this, take a breath and remember that this is only them expressing their own view about how the world works.

An interesting thing to remember is that there is no right way to think – we simply create our own experiences based on our beliefs and mindset. You have the power to shape your life experience based on your own worldview. To each his own!

  1. Hey, Kate–

I’m writing in defense of the King of Swords! Poor him! He gets such a bad rap! Of course, he does totally have a sword stuck up his, ahem, backside, but think how much that has to hurt! No wonder it’s hard for him to unbend.

However, in two very recent readings, I’ve found him arriving to suggest to two different querents (Full disclosure: One of them was me.) that a more prudent, conservative approach to the matter(s) in question would be advisable.

And you know what? He proved objectively correct in one case. (Yup. Interest rates dipped.) In the other, the advice he was offering was well-grounded and realistic. Sure, “well-grounded” and “realistic” don’t necessarily translate to “tons of big fun and monkey love,” but there are times with monkey love is not going to get the mortgage paid. (Oh, god, here I am back on the mortgage . . .)

Anyway, this is just a message of support for my Court-mate the King, from his own
    Queen.

Hugs (Ouch! I forgot to take the sword out. Sorry. Did I snip you a little bit? No worries. When you’re a sword-court, you always carry bandaids!)

    1. On the other hand . . .

What’s funny is that I’m going to leave the computer now to go do some future-dreaming that will not be the sort of activity the King of Swords would approve of at all!

So I guess, as with most things (!!), it’s important to evaluate the worth of any point of view or piece of input with a sense of how it fits into the moment of my life: Sometimes the King of Swords is suggesting a fittingly prudent course and sometimes he’s just standing in the way of, well, big monkey love.

      Monkey hugs,

    2. He does have his good qualities, Jamie – thanks for pointing them out. Sometimes we need “rational” advice, but today I felt we didn’t! hee hee!

  2. This is so true for me. It does frustrate me sometimes when someone acts like this. And I noticed I react differently due to the differnt moon phases. So I either smile n let it be or I cry or I get angry and blow up standing up for what I believe in. That’s when I’m being called crazy. I have to remind myself to just take a deep breath, step back and just let it be. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. 🙂 thanks Kate! Oh funny thing…I saw this same card last night for the 1st time in an old youtube video. Cool deck.

    1. Erica, I can relate! It IS hard sometimes to brush off other’s negative viewpoints. But I think we all have at least a couple people in our lives like this – so we will all get lots of practice dealing with it!

  3. I’ve just found your website and Youtube channel and I am really enjoying both.
    Greetings from the Netherlands
