The Most Rebellious Way to Read Tarot….EVER!

Are you tired of reading Tarot in the same old, tired, boring way? Are you ready to kick things up a notch and read outside the box?

You know how you shuffle the deck and then randomly choose some cards? Scrap that!

There’s a new, cheeky way to read Tarot and I want you to give it a go. But first, some background….

The other night I was getting ready to give myself a Tarot reading and I thought “I hope I don’t get any shitty cards.”

I had just had a particularly uninspiring day and I wanted to perk myself up.

Then an epiphany slammed into my brain!

What if I just chose the cards I wanted?

So I did.

I picked the three cards I really, really wanted. The Empress, The Magician and the Ace of Cups.

These cards symbolize the kind of energy I want to bring into my life – creativity, power, magic and fulfillment!

Okay – I want you to stop right now, get your Tarot deck and choose the 3 cards that you would just LOVE to get in a reading. Like your 3 favorite cards or the 3 cards that really sum up what you want to draw into your life right now.

Now, look at each card one by one and ask yourself these questions:

  1. How am I already like this card?
  2. What activities or things help me feel like this card?
  3. How would I like this card to show up in my life right now?
  4. What can I do – today- to create more of this in my life?
  5. Is there anything that might stop me from doing this and how will I overcome it?

Here is a little sample of how I did this exercise for the first card….

How am I already like this card?

When I looked at The Empress I reminded myself that I am creative (I like arts and crafts!) and I can be nurturing sometimes (like with my houseplants).

What activities or things help me feel like this card?

Painting helps me feel creative and relaxed, just like The Empress and spending time in the kitchen making tasty things feels very nurturing.

How would I like this card to show up in my life right now?

I would to be able to relax more and feel abundant, like everything is unfolding and happening in the way it needs to and all I need to do is hold the space for things to flourish, instead of feeling like I have to do, do, do, push, push, push.

What can I do – today –Β  to create more of this in my life?

Practice meditation! I always forget to do this. And make time to paint at least once a week.

Is there anything that might stop me from doing this and how will I overcome it?

I might tell myself that I don’t have time and there are other things that should take priority – like doing homework, working on creating my Tarot course or doing laundry. I will overcome this by writing my painting or meditation date into my calendar each week and then maybe inviting a friend to join me (so I can’t waffle and do laundry instead!)

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

Doing this exercise with your Tarot cards might actually create real change! This exercise isn’t for wimps, so don’t attempt this unless your ready to become a fearless, deep diving Tarot explorer πŸ˜‰

Tying it together….

Now that you’ve drilled down each card individually, take a step back and look at these cards as a whole. Do you noticed any similarities between the cards? Any repeating symbols, colors, suits or numbers?

Repeating patterns are your subconscious’ way of getting your attention and communicating something super-secret and important to you!

For example, I notice that there are lots of wings in my three cards – butterflies, a dragonfly and birds. What do wings represent for me? Freedom!

So there is some message here about breaking free or feeling free – and if I choose to go deeper into the reading I can contemplate this a bit more and maybe journal about it. But I’m lazy right now, so I think I’ll just go watch Mad Men and eat a vanilla bean chocolate bar…..it’s from the health food store so it doesn’t count as junk food πŸ˜‰

I’d love to hear from you!! Please feel free to share your cards and your epiphanies in the comments below….

  1. Also, I have just ordered the Crystal Visions deck but much prefer it without borders….do you have any tips for removing the borders and rounding the corners to get a professional finish??

  2. I am a counsellor and use tarot with my clients in a similar way to this. I find that asking a client to choose a couple of cards which resonate with them is a great jumping off point for further exploration. Strangely I’ve never thought of doing it for myself though! I will definitely be giving it a go though now!

  3. This is soo funny ’cause I was thinking about doing the same exercise as you did! πŸ™‚ wow!! It is amazing how we people connect to each other without knowing it, or have the same ideas regardless of where we are at that time. Cool! πŸ™‚

Lovely cards, and I liked the ace of cups with it’s lovely, purple colour:) It spoke to me.

I hope you will do more of this exercise since it kind of forces you to take a little more control of your own future rather than letting the universe, or something, to decide what lays ahead of you.

    Great exercise! πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks Maria! I’m glad you enjoyed this and it’s funny you got the same idea – another commenter said the same thing! Maybe it was some thought wave that was passing through and we all tapped into it. I agree that this exercise forces you to step into your own power, which is what I liked about it too! πŸ™‚

      Cheers,
      Kate

  4. Where did you get your tarot cards from? I can never seem to find a full deck of tarot’s, no matter where I go or where I look! Please help me!

  5. Hi Kate,

I tried this already when I posted my picture on fb. I picked 3 cards I wanted for myself, the reason behind it is to set my intention. Do you think by picking the cards we want we focus better on the things we want for ourselves? I did not write a post about it in my blog about it, but maybe I should have done it now seeing other people’s reactions on your blog.
Just so you know I thought about it first. Here is a link to my fb to prove it https://www.facebook.com/apartament.devanzare

    1. Hi Biancat,
That’s so funny you mention this! Another commenter said the same thing – that she had this idea before I posted my blog. So who thought of it first? Maybe we should all battle it out, LOL! I guess great minds think alike. And yes, I think that by choosing the cards we want, we can better focus on what we want to create in our lives – it gives us a nice visual touchstone, if you know what I mean.
      Cheers,
      Kate

  6. This is awesome! I have done similar things with dropped cards when shuffling my decks. Your suggestion makes more sense to me. I always have a little trouble interpeting standard tarot spreads. This is more fun πŸ˜€ Thank You!

  7. Kate,
This is truly inspiring. There have been times when due to some distress or another I feel like reading for myself would be counterproductive, IE will not have clear vision due to circumstances. At these times I generally just look through my decks or worse I don’t get them out. Now thanks to you I have a better way to approach those lackluster times. You rock

    1. YES! This exercise is perfect for those times – which, let’s face it, is typically when we want to do a reading anyway!
So glad you enjoyed this πŸ™‚
      Hugs,
      Kate

  8. This is totally brilliant, Kate!

I noticed I’ve been doing something not the same, but not totally unrelated, either: I usually draw three cards (randomly), and lately (this last week!), although I’ve still done the random draw, I’ve been rearranging the cards to tell a story that I feel offers me useful insight.

I may have to step it up a notch, and try your approach full out!

    Happy Tuesday.
Thanks for the bonus boost in my inbox.

  9. You are spot on Kate. Thanks for sharing your journey and this great post. Your key magical words here unlock everything “I WANT”.

  10. What an inspiring post Kate! πŸ™‚ I am definitely gonna give this a go. I’m currently working with a brand new deck (Raven’s Prophecy) and this could be a good way to get to know it (and myself!) a bit better.
